Seperate autopairing rating

Just to clarify that we're on the same page, are you suggesting the creation of 1-min/3-min/5-min pools like the ones on ICC?
I don't see the significance of games won in a row. Your rating is a better of your strength at any given time, and surely it makes more sense to make pairings on the basis of strength.

I agree the pools are popular on ICC, I used to play there. People who just want a game will find clicking a button (or typing "5" in the console) the easiest way to get one. I think seek ads are still popular there too.

I think nearly every player's blitz rating is higher than their 5-minute rating, usually by hundreds of points. This suggests to me a scaling difference more than anything else. Knock 400 points off every blitz rating and maybe they'll be more comparable.
Matetricks, I think that's what he has in mind. He posts videos of his games in ICC's 5-minute pool every day. I enjoy them, by the way. :)
There's literally no point knocking off rating points. Absolutely none. You're just changing a number -- the end.

The problem should never be rating points, it's just a four digit number. Nobody should attach an extreme amount of worth to it.

The point of the continuous tournament is to have competitive play, and I think it's a great idea. Putting winners against winners and losers against losers is a great and simple way to create competitive play.

Fundamentally, this system will make it harder to remain on a winning streak, and harder to remain on a losing streak. Another advantage is that with a continuous pool, it's much more like a gaming server.

The only hindrance is finding a good implementation model. There are ideas to implement a more structured tournament system that uses Round Robin, and Swiss structures. But that 'Arena' that is currently in place will hang around.

The changes that were put in place were only recently done, so I'm not very inclined to redo this work, but it may be worth it.

Instead of having scheduled tournaments for bullet, blitz, and slow; perhaps they could be repurposed to be continuous tournaments, scrapping the round-based structure.
claymore: The bias effect of choosing your own opponents when also combined with being able to play hundreds of games is actually enormous.

For example a GM rated 3100 might only choose to play other GMs rated 3100. If he wins 10-0 then he might go to 3150. Do you see how ratings with these two factors basically can go anywhere?!
A GM who reached 3100 probably earned it, so to beat another one 10-0 is a feat easily deserving of 3150. In real life, top GMs play a large proportion of their games against each other. When they play lesser GMs, they tend to trash them as expected.

So I don't see anything that isn't accounted for by the rating system.

Clarkey does seem to be taking an interest in your format though, perhaps considering making existing tournaments infinite length. That might serve the same purpose.
Yea, we've been discussing the idea at length on IRC, and we all seem to think that there's a win-win way to implement these systems.

1. The current tournaments system will be renamed to 'Arena'.

2. In Arena there will be a handful of lobbies. Probably starting with 1+0, 5+0, and 10+0; with the potential to add more in the future. (Maybe 0+1, 3+0 as well)

3. You can join or leave a lobby at any time, much like an FPS gaming server (and rejoin at any point). If you rejoin a lobby, your score will return to zero, but a total will still be recorded on your account.

4. The leaderboard within the lobby will be calculated with the current scoring system. http://en.lichess.org/tournament/faq

5. The pairing system will pair players who have the most similar winning or losing streak. i.e. If you have currently lost 5 games in a row, you will be paired with a player who has lost the most similar amount of games in a row.

6. Instead of having a 'auto-pairing' rating, there will be a Tournament Rating, that will be calculated from games that you have played within any tournament or lobby format.

Later on down the track, Swiss and Round Robin tournaments will likely be implemented, and these will be run on a scheduled format.
Does that mean that your normal rating can't change by playing (rated) tournaments anymore?
Your normal rating will also be affected. It's just an extra rating that will be calculated when playing tournament or arena matches.
