Private tournaments

I am a little confused as to the creation of a private tournament. Whenever I set a password to make the tournament private, the tournament does not appear on the tournament page. How then can the players I wish to join do so? I suppose I could send them them the URL but this is pretty slow and cumbersome, and is especially irksome if there are a large group of friends I wish to invite.

Am I missing something obvious?
I remember it used to be possible (about a year ago, I think) to see private tournaments listed on the tournament page but you couldn't join without keying in the correct password.

This was so easy and convenient, and a great disappointment when that possibility disappeared.
"Am I missing something obvious?"

Sending people a URL is a direct and simple way to tell people where to go compared to a string of instructions.
It is direct but not that simple if you have, say, 15 people to email. The previous system of displaying the tournament and then allowing interested players with the password to join was hugely preferable. I assume that even then it would have been possible to send the URL as an alternative. Now there is no option. Is there a chance that displaying closed tournaments might return?
I guess if it is a private tournament, nobody should be able to see it on the main page. Therefore, when your friends want to join the private tournament how can they know it exists.
Assume it is a group of students. The coach has prepared the tournament:
1) Copied the link of the private tournament webpage
2) Sent it to the student mailbox.
3) It is noon hour and they all log in.
4) I guess the only way for them to know or open the tournament page is to look in their mailbox to click on the link. Is it even clickable?
5) Then they wait for everyone to be in the tournament. Oh no, there is one that did not show up. Now the tournament must be cancelled because one person is missing.

Am I missing something? What happened to the user-friendly side of permitting others to go on with what was planned and to simply find a private link without the headache of sending emails to all the people that must join the tournament?

Can someone layout the user-friendly steps, for someone to join in a private tournament, not create one? In addition, find a solution if not everyone joins. My solution is creating a private pool section. How about instead of private tournament, it becomes private pool. Members of that team would always be able to join in, even if they are late. Thankyou.

I agree that there's no real need to hide tournaments from displaying on the tournaments page when joining is already password-restricted. Players should be able to informally agree to meet on lichess at a particular time, and be able to find the tournament.
Rather than waiting for all the players to join the Swiss tournament, why not make a tournament with a preselected time to start and the missing players get the BYE's. If somebody joins later, then the new players joining in can receive the BYE points.
