In this I played with white pieces and unfortunately I ran out of time, but my opponent didn't have any mating piece or series of legal checkmate sequence. I would thereby request you to please recheck it.

Betrayed by your own pawn!!!
It's technically possible for you to get checkmated because you have a pawn. You can promote it to a Bishop or rook and get semi-smothered mate on the corner of the board. Ironically if you did not have the pawn, and had only a king it would have been a draw.

I think the exact rules of whether to give draw or loss to the side running out of time when their opponent has a possible but not forcing checkmate vary from website to website and even federation to federation but in Lichess the rules clearly state that any kind of possible checkmate from the other side (even if it's not forced), will make them get the win.

And it would be an immediate draw even without a timeout.
lichess follows in this respect FIDE rules. CHess.com uses USCF rules as model hence the difference

there is only 2 sets of rules fide rules which everyone except one country uses which is the one lichess uses
then usfc rules which only the us uses which are more funny than the fide ones
To prevent this kind of events for the future, Make sure you capture all the pieces if you are running out of time to ensure the draw. As if there is any material for both sides, regardless at what it is, usually you can find a dumb way to get a matting net making the worst possible moves that no sentient being could make, but it is possible to achieve, as lichess plays with Fide rules, and where the Fide rules dont state anything about enough mating material, they only state about a possible mating position.

So, it is possible to promote the pawn to a queen and mate. It may not happen in a real game, but its an actual possibility.
...or play with sufficient increment so that you can play such endgame long enough to claim third repetition or 50 move rule without timing out.
